Celebration School is in the midst of a fund drive to raise $240,000.00 for instructional technology.  As technology has increased in the classroom over the years, Celebration School has fallen behind. 

There are three reasons why Celebration School is behind many other schools.  First, Celebration School does not qualify for federal funds since they do not have a large population of economically disadvantaged students.  Recently a school with Title I funds was able to purchase Interactive Boards for each teacher to use in the classroom.

Secondly, Celebration School does not qualify for many offered grants due to the community’s high socio-economic status, lack of diversity, and high performance rates.  Celebration School has been an “A” school for the past eight years. 

Lastly, the district can not provide technology funds since the State has consistently decreased all funding to the district.  This year the district is operating at $30, 000,000.00 less than two years ago.

The instructional technology currently being used in the classroom consists of the following: computer, projector, document camera, interactive board, classroom response system, interactive tablet, and audio enhancement system.  It can cost as much as $4,000 to equip a classroom effectively.  A technologically enhanced educational environment can engage the students, provide more time on-task, and ultimately increase learning.  Many of the schools which are advanced in technology are seeing an increase in their students’ scores and the overall school grade. 

Concerned parents and the administration have joined together to create a TechupK8 committee responsible for raising funds through activities such as the just-completed phone pledge drive.  The committee members will be visiting all the businesses in the Celebration community during the month of January to seek donations. Donations are also being sought from people who have either a personal or professional stake in the community. Recently, it was agreed that any funds generated from the Celebration Games to be held this February would go to the technology fund.  The committee website www.techupk8.org provides additional details regarding equipment needed, donor levels, and a list of what each teacher has in their classroom.

The school administration has signed an agreement with DirecTV4School.com in which $100 could be donated to the school by new sub-scribers and $50 will be donated by renewing a subscription.  All new and renewing subscribers would have to do is use the school code B2616.  If 1,000 homes would sign up for this program, we could have $50,000 given to the school each year for technology.   The best thing about it is that anyone, anywhere in the country can donate to the school simply by using the code.

Although Celebration School still has a long way to go, each step gets them closer to their goal.  Currently, they have raised $15,000 and have been able to purchase 15 document cameras.  That’s 15 more than they had before the initiation of the TeckupK8 program.  They are confident that through the support of the Celebration community and concerned individuals, they will reach their goal and be a school on the cutting edge of instructional technology.

Many Florida residents that go back to school attend adult education classes with this intent. Enroll in a Florida college or Central Florida University adult education classes without pursuing a degree. For many, this route is far more economical than committing to a four-year degree program. By taking specific adult education classes that would help you on the job, you could earn a professional certificate instead of a degree. A certificate could still work to solidify your value to your company, as it would show that you are dedicated to professional development and continually striving to keep up on advancements in strategy and technology in your field.

Getting kids to eat healthy can be quite a challenge—children seem to abide the rules of “bad things taste good, good things taste bad,” and “eat things that taste good.” Even adults fall into this pattern often.  However, it’s important for everyone to eat a healthy diet. Also, be sure your kids are eating enough grain and plenty of vegetables and fruits. It’s okay to treat your children once in a while, but make sure to keep it occasional; they will thank you someday.

I’m sure you’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day…  It is! Make sure that your kids have breakfast. Kids need energy to get through the day, and those who skip breakfast are likely to overeat later in the day. Countless studies suggest that kids who eat breakfast perform better at school and have lower levels of cholesterol, lower weight and less illness. Try to whip up a balanced breakfast that includes carbs, calcium and fruits. A bowl of cereal (not too sugary) with a banana or a waffle with fruit and yogurt are both good breakfast foods for kids. There are many health food stores in Celebration and the surrounding areas in Orlando.  Many of these stores have nutritional experts on staff and will assist you in planning the appropriate diet for your family.

But while maintaining a healthy diet has great benefits, these benefits can diminish if they aren’t supplemented with exercise.   Healthy eating isn’t enough.  Healthy living includes healthy eating and regular physical activity.  Eating healthy won’t do your children a whole lot of good if they’re sitting in front of the TV all day. Healthy eating for kids starts with healthy eating for parents. Parents’ eating habits heavily influence how and what their kids eat. So, set a good example. Raise the bar, and make healthy eating a family activity.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management provides important information to help the State’s residents and visitors address disaster issues through a variety of printed publications and online services. Among the Division’s online services, GETAPLAN!® is a quick and easy tool that helps residents build their own disaster plan. The Division’s KidsGetAPlan!® offers a similar opportunity for younger residents to understand what disasters are, how to prepare for them and help create their family’s disaster plan.

The ambassador of KidsGetAPlan!®  Professor Tinkermeister and his crew of kids and critters, encourages children to prepare safety measures for all kinds of weather. With a variety of games, coloring pages, screen savers, weather-related data and so much more, children from kindergarten to high school learn about disaster preparedness. The Division hopes to encourage children and their families to get a plan through this online service.

“Our intention is to reach every family in Florida and teach them about being prepared,” said Bryan W. Koon, Director of the Division of Emergency Management. “With these online applications, parents as well as children can be prepared for any potential disaster Florida may face.”

Hurricane season, or any other potential disaster, is usually seen as an issue parents alone deal with; however, children are often aware of their parents’ concern and may become anxious because they don’t fully understand what might be happening or how their parents are dealing with the situation. This online application was created specifically to help children better understand preparing for potential disasters with friendly characters and fun activities.

Through KidsGetAPlan!®, DEM also offers the Hazardous Weather guide for older children, which provides a variety of information on weather issues, as well as online books, games and links to other kid-friendly sites for weather and emergency management education information. Online books for 1^st-5^th grade students are available as well, along with guides to assist teachers and parents in helping children better understand and prepare for disasters.

KidsGetAPlan!® also features this year’s video and poster winners for the 2011 Severe Weather Awareness Week Contest.  The Division teamed up with the American Red Cross to offer Florida students in middle and high school the chance to create severe weather safety posters and video public service announcements, which will be used as part of the Division’s 2011 Public Outreach Statewide Campaign. While most contestants offered a sense of humor in their productions, each entry is a serious effort to help increase awareness for this age group.

“We hope Florida residents who don’t yet have a plan will take a few moments to create one, and that they include everyone in the family,” said Gwen Keenan, Bureau of Preparedness Chief for the Division. “Whether you’re five or 95, having a plan before disaster strikes will help ensure you and your family survive.”

The 3 day diet is one of those trendy little diets that seems to be popular today.  If you follow the 3 day diet correctly, you can supposedly lose upwards to 10 pounds in just three days.  That seems like a lot of weight to lose in such a short period of time, is it healthy or even possible?

While its certainly possible to lose 10 pounds or even more in just three days, it’s probably not healthy, and generally not recommended by health professionals.  The 3 day diet is invariably frowned on by nutritionists as being an overall a fad diet that is not very effective in producing sustainable weight lose.  Sure you can lose 10 pounds in three days, but the chances are you’ll put it right back on again when you finish.

The 3 day diet isn’t really anything scientific or overly complicated.  It’s basically just your typical calorie restricted diet.  Most formulas for it involve three meals a day consisting of very limited portions of low fat, low sugar foods.  Some examples of a few of the meals recommended in the 3 day diet include half a grapefruit and one slice of toast for breakfast; a half a cup of tuna (no mayo) and a slice of toast for lunch; and a three ounce portion of chicken, two cups of vegetables and one cup of ice cream for dinner.

Like many diets, the 3 day diet recommends drinking 4+ glasses of water daily, and allows you to add any low calorie seasonings to your food, such as Worchester sauce, spices, mustards, vinegars, salt and pepper, soy sauce or ketchup.  It also allows for drinking tea, coffee, or diet soda, so long as there is no sugar added.

So does this kind of 3 day diet plan work?  Chances are you will in fact lose some weight if you stick to it.  However, going from eating normal or oversized portions to eating the kinds of meals recommended in the three day diet is going to through your body’s metabolism for a loop.  Essentially, you’ll be on starvation mode, and the moment you resume regular food consumption you’ll promptly start gaining wait again.

The recommendation to drink plenty of water is really the only thing the 3 day diet does right.  Everyone should drink at least 4 glasses of water a day, whether dieting or not, and ideally should drink even more.

Overall, the 3 day diet is not the best diet plan.  If you are otherwise healthy and just want to lose a few pounds for a reunion, wedding, or some other event coming up on the weekend, the 3 day diet may help, but in terms of an effective sustainable weight lose program its not going to help much in the long run.
