Florida Hospital Celebration Health – Dr. Redan

Redan art

Dr. Redan: A Highly Accomplished Name in Laparoscopic Surgery

Less pain, no large incision scar, reduced hospital stay, and extremely short period of recovery are all benefits offered by modern laparoscopic surgical techniques. However, having a highly skilled surgeon is just as important as the surgical techniques in order to fully exploit the potentials of laparoscopy. Dr. Jay A. Redan, director of minimally invasive surgery at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, is known as one of the best laparoscopic surgeon in the United States. The majority of Dr. Redan’s patients recover without pain, scarring, or complications due to his outstanding skills in laparoscopic surgical techniques.

Dr. Redan and his team at Florida Hospital Celebration Health conduct laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries by inserting a scope through a very small incision, or no incision at all Dr. Redan and his team use advanced endoluminal and laparoscopic techniques that are usually not available in general medical practices.  Due to non-availability of these state-of-the-art facilities and services closer to home, a large number of patients travel to Central Florida from around the world to come to Florida Hospital Celebration Health.  Dr. Redan conducts many surgeries including colo-rectal, hiatal hernia many others abdominal and thoracic procedures. However, his expertise is in removing the polyps and tumors with the laparo-endoscopic approach. Dr. Redan also works with world-renowned gynecologist, Dr. Steven McCarus, at Celebration Health to perform endometriosis and female reproductive surgeries including complex and complicated abdominal surgeries.

Dr. Redan has performed over 4,500 minimally invasive operations in the last 20 years. Dr. Redan also provides services for those patients dealing with complications arising from their previous traditional surgeries. Many patients come to Dr. Redan after having suffered with such complications. Typically these post-surgery complications cannot be identified with CT scans or MRIs and patients are often told to take medications to offset the effects of these traditional complications. At Celebration Health’s Center for Complex Abdominal and Pelvic Pain Syndrome, Dr. Redan uses his laparoscopic surgical skills to treat these patients and results are often exceptionally positive.

His dedication to laparoscopic surgery is not only beneficial to humans but animals as well.  Dr. Redan recently performed laparoscopic surgery on an antelope at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom with great success.

To disseminate his immense knowledge and experience, Dr. Redan travels around the world to train other surgeons in these specialized laparoscopic techniques. He has published many researcher papers and has served on the editorial staff for the Journal of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the Trocar Online Videojournal of Gynecologic and Surgical Laparoscopy.

Healthy Eating for Kids

August 17, 2010 by Celebration Florida Magazine
Filed under Health & Beauty

kids eat healthy

Getting kids to eat healthy can be quite a challenge—children seem to abide the rules of “bad things taste good, good things taste bad,” and “eat things that taste good.” Even adults fall into this pattern often.  However, it’s important for everyone to eat a healthy diet. It’s especially important for kids because they are still in the stages of developmental growth; how they take care of their health when they’re young can strongly impact how healthy they grow up to be as adults. Parents should be informed about healthy eating for kids so that they provide their children with what’s good for them.

Healthy eating for kids includes components from all parts of the food pyramid. The key to healthy eating is Balance. Too much consumption in one area can have negative health consequences. This is especially true of fats, salts and sugars. And while substances like protein nourish our bodies and are generally good for us, an excess of protein can put more stress on the body and lead to the buildup of fat. So a healthy diet for kids is low in fat, salts and sugars and it has a substantial, but not excessive amount of things like protein, calcium, carbohydrates and iron. Also, be sure your kids are eating enough grain and plenty of vegetables and fruits. It’s okay to treat your children once in a while, but make sure to keep it occasional; they will thank you someday.

I’m sure you’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day…  It is! Make sure that your kids have breakfast. Kids need energy to get through the day, and those who skip breakfast are likely to overeat later in the day. Countless studies suggest that kids who eat breakfast perform better at school and have lower levels of cholesterol, lower weight and less illness. Try to whip up a balanced breakfast that includes carbs, calcium and fruits. A bowl of cereal (not too sugary) with a banana or a waffle with fruit and yogurt are both good breakfast foods for kids. There are many health food stores in Celebration and the surrounding areas in Orlando.  Many of these stores have nutritional experts on staff and will assist you in planning the appropriate diet for your family.

But while maintaining a healthy diet has great benefits, these benefits can diminish if they aren’t supplemented with exercise.   Healthy eating isn’t enough.  Healthy living includes healthy eating and regular physical activity.  Eating healthy won’t do your children a whole lot of good if they’re sitting in front of the TV all day. Healthy eating for kids starts with healthy eating for parents. Parents’ eating habits heavily influence how and what their kids eat. So, set a good example. Raise the bar, and make healthy eating a family activity.

Heart Healthy Eating

heart healthy eating

Heart disease is the scourge of American society. More than cancer or AIDS, more than car crashes or wars, heart disease is what is putting more Americans in the grave than any other cause. And the unfortunate thing is that in all but the most extreme cases, heart disease is eminently preventable.

Heart healthy eating is first and foremost on the prevention list and, as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Heart healthy eating basically means eating things that are natural – nuts, berries, fruits and vegetables – and eschewing the pre-packaged, over-processed snacks that predominate in American cupboards. Get rid of those Twinkies, Ho-Hos and Doritos, or they’ll put you in the ground once all is said and done.

The most important aspect of heart healthy eating is to pay attention to both balance and portion control. Balance means eating the right percentage of certain foods – again, vegetables and fruits, nuts and berries are the important ones – in relation to other foods. Yes, we all love a good steak once in a while. And yes, we’re omnivores. However, keep in mind that for every serving of steak or any other meat you should have three or more servings of fruits, vegetables, nuts or berries.

Medical professionals in Central Florida propose the best way to reduce saturated and trans fats in your diet is to limit the amount of solid fats ( butter, margarine and shortening ) you add to food when cooking and serving. Use low-fat substitutions when possible for a heart-healthy diet. For example, top your baked potato with salsa or low-fat yogurt rather than butter, or use low-sugar fruit spread on your toast instead of margarine. You may also want to check the food labels of some cookies, crackers and chips. Many of these snacks — even those labeled “reduced fat” — may be made with oils containing trans fats. One clue that a food has some trans fat in it is the phrase “partially hydrogenated” in the ingredient list

When you do use fats, choose monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil or canola oil. Polyunsaturated fats, found in nuts and seeds, also are good choices for a heart-healthy diet. When used in place of saturated fat, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats may help lower your total blood cholesterol. However, keep in mind that  moderation is essential; all types of fat are high in calories.

Weight Loss – 3 Day Diet

The 3 day diet is one of those trendy little diets that seems to be popular today.  If you follow the 3 day diet correctly, you can supposedly lose upwards to 10 pounds in just three days.  That seems like a lot of weight to lose in such a short period of time, is it healthy or even possible?

While its certainly possible to lose 10 pounds or even more in just three days, it’s probably not healthy, and generally not recommended by health professionals.  The 3 day diet is invariably frowned on by nutritionists as being an overall a fad diet that is not very effective in producing sustainable weight lose.  Sure you can lose 10 pounds in three days, but the chances are you’ll put it right back on again when you finish.

The 3 day diet isn’t really anything scientific or overly complicated.  It’s basically just your typical calorie restricted diet.  Most formulas for it involve three meals a day consisting of very limited portions of low fat, low sugar foods.  Some examples of a few of the meals recommended in the 3 day diet include half a grapefruit and one slice of toast for breakfast; a half a cup of tuna (no mayo) and a slice of toast for lunch; and a three ounce portion of chicken, two cups of vegetables and one cup of ice cream for dinner.

Like many diets, the 3 day diet recommends drinking 4+ glasses of water daily, and allows you to add any low calorie seasonings to your food, such as Worchester sauce, spices, mustards, vinegars, salt and pepper, soy sauce or ketchup.  It also allows for drinking tea, coffee, or diet soda, so long as there is no sugar added.

So does this kind of 3 day diet plan work?  Chances are you will in fact lose some weight if you stick to it.  However, going from eating normal or oversized portions to eating the kinds of meals recommended in the three day diet is going to through your body’s metabolism for a loop.  Essentially, you’ll be on starvation mode, and the moment you resume regular food consumption you’ll promptly start gaining wait again.

The recommendation to drink plenty of water is really the only thing the 3 day diet does right.  Everyone should drink at least 4 glasses of water a day, whether dieting or not, and ideally should drink even more.

Overall, the 3 day diet is not the best diet plan.  If you are otherwise healthy and just want to lose a few pounds for a reunion, wedding, or some other event coming up on the weekend, the 3 day diet may help, but in terms of an effective sustainable weight lose program its not going to help much in the long run.

Florida Hospital – Dr. McCarus

McCarus- Florida Hospital Celebration healthMcCarus Technique: Outstanding laparoscopic technique for Hysterectomy by Dr. McCarus

The laparoscopic technique of removal of the uterus or “hysterectomy” is gaining more and more popularity as a minimal invasive technique. Traditional or open surgical techniques carry many disadvantages including: large painful abdominal incision, scar, longer hospital stay and recovery period (approx 6-8 weeks).

Dr. Steve McCarus, board-certified gynecologist with specialty in laparoscopic gynecological surgery and director of the Center for Pelvic health at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, has received enormous attention for his contributions in the development of the minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Before the development of the “McCarus Technique,” patients had to stay in the hospital for longer periods of time, followed by a recovery period of at least six weeks. Using Ultrasonic harmonic energy to perform hysterectomies via a tiny hole in the belly, the McCarus Technique offers early discharge from the hospital, averaging one day in most patients, followed by a shorter recovery period of only two weeks.

Dr. McCarus took the task of improving already existing techniques by gathering data and simplifying the method to show a proven outcome. After refining the instrumentation and collecting data, in 2006, he was able to develop a refined technique.  He is now educating patients and physicians on the benefits of his well improved minimally invasive technique. He is also working with insurance companies and wants more and more people to know that this type of surgery is available to them, and to convince surgeons to become adept at performing it.

With ever increasing popularity of the “McCarus Technique”, physicians from all over the globe are coming to Central Florida to learn this state-of-the-art technique from him at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement at Florida Hospital Celebration Hospital. The American Society for Women’s Health, founded by McCarus himself, and Florida Hospital Celebration Health has a Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Program which offers training to postgraduate residents.

Dr. McCarus is also well known for treating disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and incontinence, and offers infertility evaluations and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) consultations.
