I must admit that I love all the latest electronic devices and tend to get all the latest gizmos as soon as they come out. These things do seem to make me happy; at least in the short term anyway. There is some debate though as to the overall affect these devices have over our lives. Do they make us happy overall? I intend to explore both sides of the case in this article.
Nobody can doubt the wonderful things that electronic devices can actually do. These days the ability of communicate with people half way across the planet is so easy and can be done almost instantly so it is no wonder that so many of us have so many online friends these days. Electronic devices help us in every part of our lives and there are constantly new devices being developed which improve certain aspects of our lives. GPS technology for example is superb because it can help us get from A to B without ever getting lost and while we are getting to our destination it can also give us information about the surrounding area. If you wanted to be able to take your entire collection of books with you wherever you go, then an eBook reader is a wonderful device to have as well. So it is obvious to see the benefits of modern technology but are there any drawbacks to it?
I think in some ways that modern devices are moving us further away from reality. People do tend to spend more time speaking to others online or by texting than they would face to face. We often only get to experience nature through the television instead of getting out there in the open. We are spending increasing periods of our life away from reality and there is a worry about what this might be doing to our mental health.
