Most of the questions that we get about PC maintenance are pretty specific. The most general question has simply to do with maintaining a PC over time. We believe that this is unique enough topic to justify its own separate article.
Maintaining your PC over time means doing all the specific things to protect it physically as well as operationally. It is sort of like spring cleaning – you can live without it but the house lasts longer with it. This applies to a PC – doing those infrequent things that enhance its life.
Let us begin with cleanliness. You should physically clean your PC cabinet and especially lint and dust buildup at least semi-annually. This will prevent any problems with air passage that might create overheating problems. Also ensure that your replacement of the box is not such that it prevents natural airflow to its interior. You should also blow out dust and lint with compressed air or a non-static vacuum cleaner. Physical cleaning will enhance the life of your motherboard. Taken together this will result in a healthy and temp-protected motherboard.
Quarterly, you should delete any unused applications and data files. There is not a shutdown potential; just good sense.
Semiannually you should reorganize and defrag your hard drive. This is productivity of the hardware and often yields performance improvement. Access the utilities for this via the Control Panel.
Regularly delete and reinstall your net browser. Monthly, between reinstalls you should diligently delete all temp files, browsing history, and refresh the cache. All this, taken together will greatly improve the browser performance.
Perform the three technical PC maintenance issues annually or monthly as prescribed. First is a manually executed run of your virus protection system at least monthly. Many viruses are programmed to start doing whatever they do and initiate commencement on the first of the month. Therefore you should do your planned manual trip of your virus software on the morning of the 2nd of each month.
Annually reload your OS. All modern PCs now come with the DOS-level execution of the OS from CD. Doing this will have no effect on any installed apps; rather it will clean out all the unnecessary temp files and dozens of other things that most people are unaware of. Ensure that you gain access to the MS site for reapplication of any known patches or updates since the last release.
Finally, you should run your registry maintenance program. You can purchase and download a top registry software package that does this and also performs the other registry fix functions that accomplish any needed Registry Repair as a part of your newfound performance involvement procedures.
