Planning Your Container Garden

You should first choose if your container garden be indoors or out. A lot of people think container gardening is only for indoor growing and patios, but containers can actually be useful for any garden situation.

You can plant almost anything in containers because containers are very versatile. Moving container gardens is easy. Traditional gardens don’t allow the same thing.

During bad weather, you are free to move your pots to a protected area. You can’t do that with traditional gardens.

You are free to move your plants when their present location isn’t as good as you first thought.

Outdoor container gardens’ location is very important. Ideally, your container garden’s location should have enough sunlight for you plants and should also be easy to access. It’s easy to lose motivation to work on your garden if it’s several hundred yards away from the house!

Be sure to locate your plants as far away from streets as you can. Pollution from cars, as well as the dust they kick up, can damage your plants and contaminate them. You can also be harmed if you eat your plants, so the farther the plants are from the street, the better.

Indoor container gardens’ location should also be chosen carefully. The warmest area inside your house is probably the best location for your plants.

Plants generally won’t thrive in cold temperatures, so if you have a cold house, set aside a room that’s kept warm especially for your garden. If possible, get the room with the most sunlight.

Plants grow better with natural light. If sunlight isn’t able to enter a room, put special lights there for your plants. Not fluorescent lights, though.

You need to get the kind of lights especially for plants. They give off a kind of light that’s like the sun’s. Your plants may have different humidity requirements than that of the room’s, so you might have to regulate that, too.

Plants have different humidity requirements. If you have very sensitive plants, then you should invest in machines that adjust humidity. This is mostly the case for unusual plants.

Next, you’ll need to choose which plants you want to grow. Think over them carefully. Too many people choose to plant far too many varieties, and end up frustrated. You wouldn’t want to plant something that you can buy at a low price in stores.

Your garden should have plants that are expensive in stores, or those that aren’t available locally. Tomatoes are often planted in home gardens because of the great difference in quality when compare to their store-bought counterparts.

You should think if you want an organic garden or not. If you’re growing indoors, this will probably be very simple to do. But if you’re growing your plants outside, you may find the frustration of dealing with pests is just too much for you. Don’t feel guilty if you find organic gardening too difficult. There’s always time to try it when you are more experienced.
