Dr. Redan: A Highly Accomplished Name in Laparoscopic Surgery
Less pain, no large incision scar, reduced hospital stay, and extremely short period of recovery are all benefits offered by modern laparoscopic surgical techniques. However, having a highly skilled surgeon is just as important as the surgical techniques in order to fully exploit the potentials of laparoscopy. Dr. Jay A. Redan, director of minimally invasive surgery at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, is known as one of the best laparoscopic surgeon in the United States. The majority of Dr. Redan’s patients recover without pain, scarring, or complications due to his outstanding skills in laparoscopic surgical techniques.
Dr. Redan and his team at Florida Hospital Celebration Health conduct laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries by inserting a scope through a very small incision, or no incision at all Dr. Redan and his team use advanced endoluminal and laparoscopic techniques that are usually not available in general medical practices. Due to non-availability of these state-of-the-art facilities and services closer to home, a large number of patients travel to Central Florida from around the world to come to Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Dr. Redan conducts many surgeries including colo-rectal, hiatal hernia many others abdominal and thoracic procedures. However, his expertise is in removing the polyps and tumors with the laparo-endoscopic approach. Dr. Redan also works with world-renowned gynecologist, Dr. Steven McCarus, at Celebration Health to perform endometriosis and female reproductive surgeries including complex and complicated abdominal surgeries.
Dr. Redan has performed over 4,500 minimally invasive operations in the last 20 years. Dr. Redan also provides services for those patients dealing with complications arising from their previous traditional surgeries. Many patients come to Dr. Redan after having suffered with such complications. Typically these post-surgery complications cannot be identified with CT scans or MRIs and patients are often told to take medications to offset the effects of these traditional complications. At Celebration Health’s Center for Complex Abdominal and Pelvic Pain Syndrome, Dr. Redan uses his laparoscopic surgical skills to treat these patients and results are often exceptionally positive.
His dedication to laparoscopic surgery is not only beneficial to humans but animals as well. Dr. Redan recently performed laparoscopic surgery on an antelope at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom with great success.
To disseminate his immense knowledge and experience, Dr. Redan travels around the world to train other surgeons in these specialized laparoscopic techniques. He has published many researcher papers and has served on the editorial staff for the Journal of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the Trocar Online Videojournal of Gynecologic and Surgical Laparoscopy.

Weight Loss – 3 Day Diet
August 4, 2010 by Celebration Florida Magazine
Filed under Health & Beauty
The 3 day diet is one of those trendy little diets that seems to be popular today. If you follow the 3 day diet correctly, you can supposedly lose upwards to 10 pounds in just three days. That seems like a lot of weight to lose in such a short period of time, is it healthy or even possible?
While its certainly possible to lose 10 pounds or even more in just three days, it’s probably not healthy, and generally not recommended by health professionals. The 3 day diet is invariably frowned on by nutritionists as being an overall a fad diet that is not very effective in producing sustainable weight lose. Sure you can lose 10 pounds in three days, but the chances are you’ll put it right back on again when you finish.
The 3 day diet isn’t really anything scientific or overly complicated. It’s basically just your typical calorie restricted diet. Most formulas for it involve three meals a day consisting of very limited portions of low fat, low sugar foods. Some examples of a few of the meals recommended in the 3 day diet include half a grapefruit and one slice of toast for breakfast; a half a cup of tuna (no mayo) and a slice of toast for lunch; and a three ounce portion of chicken, two cups of vegetables and one cup of ice cream for dinner.
Like many diets, the 3 day diet recommends drinking 4+ glasses of water daily, and allows you to add any low calorie seasonings to your food, such as Worchester sauce, spices, mustards, vinegars, salt and pepper, soy sauce or ketchup. It also allows for drinking tea, coffee, or diet soda, so long as there is no sugar added.
So does this kind of 3 day diet plan work? Chances are you will in fact lose some weight if you stick to it. However, going from eating normal or oversized portions to eating the kinds of meals recommended in the three day diet is going to through your body’s metabolism for a loop. Essentially, you’ll be on starvation mode, and the moment you resume regular food consumption you’ll promptly start gaining wait again.
The recommendation to drink plenty of water is really the only thing the 3 day diet does right. Everyone should drink at least 4 glasses of water a day, whether dieting or not, and ideally should drink even more.
Overall, the 3 day diet is not the best diet plan. If you are otherwise healthy and just want to lose a few pounds for a reunion, wedding, or some other event coming up on the weekend, the 3 day diet may help, but in terms of an effective sustainable weight lose program its not going to help much in the long run.

McCarus Technique: Outstanding laparoscopic technique for Hysterectomy by Dr. McCarus
The laparoscopic technique of removal of the uterus or “hysterectomy” is gaining more and more popularity as a minimal invasive technique. Traditional or open surgical techniques carry many disadvantages including: large painful abdominal incision, scar, longer hospital stay and recovery period (approx 6-8 weeks).
Dr. Steve McCarus, board-certified gynecologist with specialty in laparoscopic gynecological surgery and director of the Center for Pelvic health at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, has received enormous attention for his contributions in the development of the minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy.
Before the development of the “McCarus Technique,” patients had to stay in the hospital for longer periods of time, followed by a recovery period of at least six weeks. Using Ultrasonic harmonic energy to perform hysterectomies via a tiny hole in the belly, the McCarus Technique offers early discharge from the hospital, averaging one day in most patients, followed by a shorter recovery period of only two weeks.
Dr. McCarus took the task of improving already existing techniques by gathering data and simplifying the method to show a proven outcome. After refining the instrumentation and collecting data, in 2006, he was able to develop a refined technique. He is now educating patients and physicians on the benefits of his well improved minimally invasive technique. He is also working with insurance companies and wants more and more people to know that this type of surgery is available to them, and to convince surgeons to become adept at performing it.
With ever increasing popularity of the “McCarus Technique”, physicians from all over the globe are coming to Central Florida to learn this state-of-the-art technique from him at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement at Florida Hospital Celebration Hospital. The American Society for Women’s Health, founded by McCarus himself, and Florida Hospital Celebration Health has a Gynecologic Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Program which offers training to postgraduate residents.
Dr. McCarus is also well known for treating disorders such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids and incontinence, and offers infertility evaluations and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) consultations.

Celebration Medical Company Gets Stimulus Money
April 9, 2010 by Jim Siegel
Located in Celebration, Florida, the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement (NCSA) was recently awarded $4.2 million by the federal government as part of the 2009 federal stimulus program. The project was one of two earmarks requested by Congressman Allan Grayson that would have directly affected Celebration. The House Appropriations Committee rejected the other, $750,000 requested to upgrade the planned Celebration library.
The Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement, located at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, develops and disseminates cutting edge surgical knowledge and techniques through state-of-the-art teleconferencing technology. Participants perform minimally invasive surgical procedures at one of nine state-of-the-art endoscopically equipped stations, mastering invasive surgical skills.
The money will pay for the training of doctors and the development of robotic surgery techniques. The money will create dozens of new high-paying jobs. A primary goal of the project is to save the lives of U.S. troops in the field. The directed spending (earmark) will come from the Department of Defense and is the largest single award in the 8th Congressional District for 2010.
Doctors will eventually be able to use the technology to perform life-saving operations on troops in the field, long before they can get to a hospital, performed remotely by surgeons that might be located anywhere in the world. The funding will lead to the direct creation of at least 50 high-tech jobs over a five-year period here. The workers will make an average of $55,000 a year.
The award will help establish a new “Global Center of Excellence in Medical Robotics and Simulation,” which will be housed at the NCSA.
“It is our vision to expand the reach of the Nicholson Center and this grant will help us make this goal a reality,” said Lars Houmann, president and CEO of Florida Hospital. “The support of the local community and lawmakers has provided us with assistance that allows Orlando to continue on its path of becoming a medical destination.”
“It is so important that physicians have access to a training facility that advances the understanding of robotic and simulation technologies,” said Dr. Monica Reed, administrator of Florida Hospital Celebration Health. “Florida Hospital Celebration Health is so fortunate to house this outstanding facility where physicians from all over the world will have the opportunity to further improve their skills in robotic surgery.”
In a press conference following the announcement of the award, Congressman Grayson admitted that the award was an earmark that apparently did not have to pass much Congressional scrutiny, but defended it on the basis of 1) earmarks are such a relatively small percentage of congressional spending, 2) because it represented defense department spending that would ordinarily go to traditional defense contractors located outside the district, and 3) because it will be used to save lives of combat soldiers in the field.
